3 Simple and Delicious Homemade Sushi Rolls on a Budget

by Justin

There are many reasons why sushi is expensive, and they are good reasons. But this doesn’t change the fact that this delightfully delicious food is not freely available to all of us.

However, you have the power to change this!

All you need is to get creative with the recipe and make your own sushi. It won’t include expensive fish, but it will be delicious nonetheless. And if you use a simple and affordable sushi maker kit, your rolls will look as perfect as the ones in restaurants after you get some practice with it.

Cheap DIY Sushi Roll Recipes Anyone Can Make

Spicy Tuna Roll

This is possibly the most delicious of “poor man’s” sushi rolls you can make. In fact, it tastes so good you might prefer it to fancy restaurant sushi. And the best thing about it is that it’s easy to make.

First of all, you cook rice for sushi rolls. Essentially, this means using some glutinous type of white rice and adding a syrup made from sugar and rice vinegar to it. It’s necessary to make the rice stick as well as enhance its flavor a bit.

Spread the rice in a thin layer over the nori and add some spicy tuna paste.

For this recipe you can use canned tuna as it’s affordable. Add to it some sriracha or chili sauce. Mayonnaise is also a popular ingredient for this mix. But essentially, you add whatever you like with your tuna to make it spicy.

Then, roll it up and cut the roll into bite-sized bits. Use a wet knife to make it easier.

Mango & Avocado Roll

Simple, easy, and very delicious, this is what this roll is like. To make it you use the same rice recipe you do for your sushi. Note that you can use well-cooked brown rice for this purpose as well.

Then, you put a strip of cucumber, a strip of mango, and a strip of avocado and roll it up. Cut and enjoy. You can also add a bit of homemade creamy cheese if you want.

Cauliflower and Quinoa Veggie Roll

If you have some quinoa and cauliflower on hand, you can make a truly outstanding sushi roll. Cook quinoa and make some cauliflower rice. Mix them well and use the mixture instead of your regular sushi rice. If it’s not sticky enough, you can use the same syrup made of sugar and vinegar.

This roll will taste best with the filling of cabbage, bell peppers, carrot, and cucumber. You can also add avocado for the fats, but it’s not necessary. Serve with soy sauce.
